Discover Golf : November 2014
DIALED IN WEIGHTING THAT DIALS UP DISTANCE. We put the center of gravity of the Fly-ZTM lower and farther back than we ever have before. Making it our longest, most forgiving driver yet. Find your far at cobragolf.com.au GAME CHANGED welcome November 2014 There are two types of golfers. Those who’ve made a hole-in-one. And those who haven’t. I’m the latter. Which was cool with me—that is until I learned around 20 aces are happening every hour somewhere in the world. So with more than 175,000 hole-in-ones being scored annually, I estimate that during my 30-year playing stint, around 5.25 million aces have occurred. It gets me thinking, am I the only one going without? Francis Scheid, a former mathematics professor at Boston University, who is also known as Professor Golf, calculated that a low handicapper would need just 1,250 rounds to make a hole-in-one. Now I estimate that I’ve managed around 600 rounds to date by averaging 20 rounds per year over my playing career. So at this rate I’ll card my first ace in my mid to late seventies. That is, if I get lucky of course! Check out our Carding An Ace feature with plenty of hole-in-one facts, figures and videos (p.11). While we are on perfect one-shotters. We’ve included images for some of the world’s most beautiful par 3s. Enjoy a snapshot of nine stunning short holes (p.17). You may be wondering how you can increase your chance of scoring a hole-in-one. Our professional Nadene, who has one ace to her name, has included three quick tips to help get your game on target (p15). As we race towards Christmas, there’s plenty of new gear in store. We feature TaylorMade’s RSi Irons, Cobra’s FLY-Z Drivers, Srixon’s Z Series woods and irons and Wilson Staff’s Duo golf balls (p.29). For those of you looking for a great destination to escape to in 2015, we’ve got a stack of golf tours and packages (p.50). Earlier this month the Drummond Golf Cup National Final was run and won. Congratulations to NT couple Rosie Whyte and Trevor Osborne who claimed the 2014 title by less than one shot. We wrap up their story (p.6). And speaking of one-shot. How about Drummond Club member Nick Caloutas scoring a hole-in-one with his first shot of the day at Drummond Golf’s Final golf day for 2014. We think that achievement is worth celebrating. Well done Nick, and thanks for inspiring us to produce Discover Golf’s ‘Ace’ November issue.
